Weather word for March: Crazy

Dark clouds hover over Colorado Springs – appropriate given this month’s weather.

From record highs to record snow, the area saw some extremes.

Nathan Travis knows it’s part of living in Colorado. “You grow up here you get used to the crazy swings,” he said.

Michelle Stellick of Colorado Springs had another problem with this month’s weather. “The thing I disliked the most was the wind it was just crazy,” she said.

The wind was erratic, including gusts to hurricane force on top of Pikes Peak.

That wind brought wildly inconsistent temperatures too.

There were blizzard conditions one day.

“How deep the snow was along with the wind made it tough to deal with,” said Travis.

Then there would be sunshine the next day.

“Just 15 miles north of here and in the afternoon the sun came out here, the snow melted and it was dry,” said Bob Stellick.

And, of course, there’s been that Southern Colorado constant: wind.

“I don’t like the wind,” said Bob Stellick.

It continues to create dangerous conditions, stoking embers as we saw at a garage fire in Pueblo in the middle of the month, and driving brush fires like one in Colorado Springs that consumed 20 acres.

“My sister, who lives around the corner, just drove up and said ‘the field behind your house is on fire,'” said Michelle Marks.

One thing is for sure, March offers a little bit of everything.

So the question now – what would you change for April?

“I would always welcome some rain and even some more snow just because of the fire danger,” Bob Stellick said.

“I’d like to see low 60s, sunny (skies). Just ride that wave for a little bit,” said Travis.

Michelle Stellick said, “I would like to have some gloomy weather and break it up with some sunny days.”

The official April outlook from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calls for above normal chances for it to be warmer and wetter around the area.

That means it’s likely we’ll see more weather like the weather that we’ve seen this month.
