Red-light cameras could face banning in Colorado
Red-light cameras could be banned throughout the state.
The Colorado Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would ban the cameras statewide.
Sen. Morgan Carroll and Rep. Steve Lebsock are the sponsors of the bill.
Lebsock said he spoke with people who said the cameras are a violation of civil liberties and privacy.
Originally, the bill would have banned red-light cameras except at the main roads, along with construction and school zones.
But the Senate added an amendment that would prevent law enforcement from issuing tickets to people who are caught running the red light on camera.
Pueblo has three red-light camera areas in the city.
Muriel Tincher, who owns a shop near one of the cameras, said the cameras have been helpful.
“We haven’t had as many accidents on this corner that they used to have. It’s a lot easier going home because when the light turns green, I don’t have to wait anymore,” she said.
The bill will be passed to the House for a vote.
Gov. John Hickenlooper vetoed two red-light camera bill bans last year.
