What went wrong: Colorado Department of Transportation’s response to spring storm

Drivers all over southern Colorado were stranded when major highways were closed due to the winter weather.

The Colorado Department of Transportation was busy trying to keep up with the roads and keep people informed through social media about the status of when the roads might reopen.

Last night they tweeted that both lanes of I-25 were open at Monument Hill and when KRDO reached out to them for clarification, we were told that the tweet had been a mistake.

CDOT Communication Manager Bob Wilson said the tweet that was sent was an internal hiccup.

“There’s some things we can definitely improve on, there’s always room for improvement, yes,” said Kenneth Quintana with CDOT.

Quintana said they knew the storm would be bad, but it came in sooner than expected.

“We knew it was going to come in hard and heavy but it definitely did come in a lot worse than we thought,” said Quintana.

CDOT spokesman Bob Wilson says they will take what they learned from this storm to improve communication in the future.
