Blizzard strands dozens of drivers in El Paso County
Rescuers are trying to reach dozens of motorists who are stranded in El Paso County.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says it is responding to between 27 and 30 reports of stranded motorists, with each call involving 15 to 20 people.
YOUR SAFETY: If you are stranded in your car, run the engine periodically to stay warm but do not let it run continuously. Roll down a window for ventilation and make sure your tail pipe remains clear of snow. Deadly fumes will build up in your car if your tail pipe becomes blocked. Do not leave your vehicle. Rescuers will get to you when they can.
El Paso County Search and Rescue is deploying its snowcats to rescue stranded drivers along Highway 24 between Peyton and Calhan.
The sheriff’s office is asking you to stay off the roads so that you do not become stuck.
Up to a foot of wind-driven snow has fallen in Woodland Park, making travel difficult.
I-70, Highway 24 and Highway 94 are among several highways that are closed in eastern Colorado because of whiteout conditions.
The Colorado Department of transportation says snow tires, chains, four wheel drive or both are required on US 24 between Wilkerson Pass and Woodland Park. Chain restrictions are also in place for Highway 67 between Woodland Park and Divide.
Agencies that are on accident alert include Colorado Springs Police, Fountain Police and State Patrol in El Paso and Teller counties.
Travel northward towards Denver is strongly discouraged.
The storm is also causing flight cancellations at DIA and the Colorado Springs Airport. You should check on the status of your flight before leaving your house.
