Sales tax ballot initiative pitched to city council

attorney in pueblo is making his case tonight for more police to keep streets safe. he pitched his half cent sales tax ballot measure to city council after a wave of violence in the steel city. but the council isn’t completely sold. krdo newschannel 13’s greg miller is live from the iron horse bar in downtown pueblo. greg – that’s where pueblo’s most recent homicide victim was killed. heather – you can still see parts of this building boarded up, that’s where bullets hit during a shooting that killed devin clark. his friends and family heard that proposal tonight. 3:08: i’m not doing okay, i’m getting by. we’re coping, taking it one day at a time. devin clark’s brother -gunned down in pueblo two weeks ago, still grieves. 3:15: there’s a new memory every day. and he wants something to come of that grief. 3:28 my brother’s legacy can’t die. that a positive change will come from this. he’s not alone – robert cordova, the stepdad of isiah vialpando wants change, too. his stepson killed in broad daylight six months ago… saying in a statement that he was a great young man and great mustician… what does this say about the city where people get shot and murdered in daylight? chostner sot: i think you need to have a certain presence on the day of devin’s death, district attorney jeff chostner said he wanted to add 50 officers through a ballot measure for voters to decide in november. he says a half-cent tax would generate seven-million dollars each year for ten years. sot: more police officers on the street, more training equipment. though there are skeptics to the specific plan. sot: police officers react to a situation that already happened, they’re not a prevention-type organization. standup: despite some initial reluctance, tyler clark says he’s not upset with city council. right now he’s looking to them for hope. sot:1:36 what kind of steps do you have in mind? i’m not asking what you’re going to do, but what do you have in mind? holding the council to their promise, that something will be done this year. council says they have a couple of other proposals for safety tax increases to consider before making a decision. police chief luis velez says he supports any measure that can get more officers on the streets. live in pueblo, gm, nc 13. and krdo newschannel 13 broke the story back in novebmer that pueblo police staffing has not changed since 1974. at that point, there were 194 sworn police personnel. in 2014, there were 193 sworn personnel. …but calls for service in that time more than doubled. we will keep following
