Pueblo Murals Taken Down

A big piece of Pueblo history has started to come down. Levee construction is underway, which means the murals are disappearing.

Just off of Grand Avenue is a record-holding mural that is going away.

“For most people I talk to, it’s like losing a piece of our history,” said Cynthia Ramu, who has worked with the murals for more than 25 years.

Ramu said it’s hard to see her work disappear.

“Oh yeah, and watch it be crunched and just turn to dust,” said Ramu.

With levee construction underway, pieces of the mural are beginning to come down.

“Things are moving a lot faster than it was happening before,” said Ramu.

Many people in the community aren’t happy about it.

“For me especially, like I’ve said, this is the best thing Pueblo has, in my opinion at least,” said Landon Johnston, a Pueblo resident.

“It shows that people from Pueblo and maybe surrounding areas put a mark on Pueblo,” said Debra Dell, a Pueblo resident.

Although the art has already started to come down, the discussion about new art has begun.

“There are a lot of arts in the community that are willing to come together with suggestions on ideas,” said Ramu.

“It’s like someone grabbed the Mona Lisa and then painted it white and said let’s redo this,” said Cody Finn, a Pueblo resident.

The construction is changing the scenery as well as the art scene.

“The whole dynamics of the wall is changing, the scale of art is changing,” said Ramu.

The first 12 feet of the levee is coming down. That phase of the project is expected to be completed by May.
