Colorado deputies disciplined after deadly shootout

A Colorado sheriff has disciplined two employees following a shootout in which a deputy was killed and two others were injured while trying to evict a man from his home.

Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener said Thursday that Undersheriff Monte Gore and Sgt. Welles Tonjes were punished for incidents that happened in the aftermath of the Feb. 24 shooting. He says they were not involved in the planning or execution of the long-delayed eviction of 58-year-old Martin Wirth.

Police say Wirth killed Cpl. Nate Carrigan and shot two deputies after they followed him into his foreclosed mountain home. Deputies returned fire, killing Wirth.

Wegener tells KCNC-TV that Gore is on leave due to concerns over the way he notified Carrigan’s father about the death. Tonjes resigned before being demoted.
