Chieftain: Verna was ‘always about Pueblo’

He is remembered as a visionary in business and government, “pro-Pueblo” to the core in everything he did.

John Verna, 82, died Feb. 26 in Pueblo.

During his life, Verna served in the Navy, owned and operated a successful landscaping business, was a city councilman and had a presence on numerous boards.

Press-wise, Verna garnered a plethora of attention for leading an inspired push to bring legalized gambling to Pueblo in the early 1980s.
