El Paso County Sheriff’s Office demos new body cameras

As of this month, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is trying out a couple of body cameras.

Two deputies are wearing them for now, until more are assigned to officers in June.

The cameras are being integrated into the uniform and turn on when deputies activate their sirens or when they detect the officer running.

“We feel that it is going to increase transparency and it is also going to give the public, law enforcement, as well as the sheriff’s office an idea of really took place,” said Jackie Kirby, spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office has looked at cameras from ten vendors so far. The cameras are expected to be fully in service sometime after June.
