City of Colorado Springs seeks input on road changes

The city of Colorado Springs is considering changes to Pikes Peak Avenue near downtown, and the staff wants the public’s impact.

The city’s proposal includes reducing travel lanes to add more bike lanes on Pikes Peak Avenue, between Nevada and Colorado Avenues. The on-street parking would also be modified.

According to the city, the project will improve bike access from Shooks Run into downtown and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

Reactions are mixed.

“I think it’s a great idea,” resident Daniel Gauron said. “I’ve been to a lot of cities, and there are very few that don’t accommodate bike paths and cyclists. We aren’t a small town anymore.”

“We don’t see the need for it,” area business owner Georgianna Lee said. “There’s really not many pedestrians that come, that walk by here. We’re a destination store. People drive here to get their products.”

The public will be able to give its input at an open house Thursday from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the City Administration Building on 30 South Nevada Avenue, Suite 102.
