Bailey residents struggle with deputy’s death

A law enforcement escort of Cpl. Nate Carrigan’s hearse Thursday through the town of Bailey symbolized his close connection with the community.

The procession passed Platte Canyon High School, from which Carrigan graduated, where his mother teaches and where he coached football and baseball.

Carrigan’s killing at the hands of shooter Martin Wirth happened a week before the start of baseball season at the school.

Despite being a full-time deputy with the Park County Sheriff’s Office for 13 years, Carrigan still found time to support many community activities and events.

“The night before (he died), he was at out kids’ basketball game,” said Kris Ellis, a town merchant. “It just shows that life is short. Life is precious.”

School bus driver April Jones said she used to drive Carrigan to school and later drove buses with him.

“He also was a school resource officer,” she said. “Most of the kids knew him. He’s not going to be replaceable.”

Ten years ago this September, the high school was the location of another tragedy when student Emily Keyes, 16, was shot and killed by Duane Morrison.

Authorities said Morrison was armed with several guns when he entered the school, held seven girls hostage and sexually assaulted them. He later died after shooting at officers who tried to rescue the hostages.

Ellis said Carrigan’s death brought back bitter memories of the school shooting.

“Our older kids were there in 2006,” she said. “The whole day of waiting for information was hard. (Wednesday) was like that.”

School continued as normal Thursday but administrators had eight grief counselors available to help any student or staff member who needed them.

“We’ll evaluate it on a daily basis but they’ll be here for the near future,” said Superintendent Brenda Krage. “(Today) was a very tough day. I know some people sought counseling.”

Residents said they’re thankful Carrigan was an important part of the community he worked to protect.
