Snow briefly freezes pothole repair Tuesday in Colorado Springs

A stretch of nicer weather conducive to pothole repairs ended Monday night and Tuesday morning with the arrival of a new winter storm.

Most of the snow in Colorado Springs quickly melted but street crews say moisture and the freeze-thaw cycle tend to accelerate pothole development.

Crews cut their normal work schedule short because of the storm, a city representative said Tuesday.

Two people contacted KRDO NewsChannel 13 Tuesday about a large pothole in the right westbound lane of Woodmen Road near the Rangewood Drive intersection.

“It has damaged the entire front passenger side of my car,” said Jesika Bender. “My tire popped instantly, (the pothole) damaged my bumper and broke the entire tire rod! I could not avoid it as there were vehicles beside me and behind me! Needless to say, I am furious. This needs to be addressed!”

Luci Duke said her car needs around $1,000 in repair work after hitting several potholes recently She lives near Cheyenne Mountain High School and said she’s still recovering from injuries suffered after tripping over a pothole five months ago.

“I cracked my kneecap, broke all my ribs, my foot still has to be dealt with and I crushed this arm,” she said. “I’ve had three surgeries. I crushed a tooth, too.”

Duke said she fell near her home at the intersection of Cresta Road and La Veta Way, an area that has many potholes and crumbling areas on the street.

She said she’s trying to be patient as the city continues to fill potholes and prepare for increased street paving this spring.

“They need to step up and get this done,” Duke said.

The city reminds people to call 719-385-ROAD to report potholes.
