Target shooting sparks grass fire in Yoder
Authorities said they haven’t decided whether to cite several people for using guns to start a fire Saturday in the eastern El Paso County community of Yoder.
The fire started around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Sanborn and Lauppe roads, south of Highway 94.
William Poole, assistant fire chief of the Tri-County District, said a group noticed the fire after using shotguns to shoot clay pigeons on their property.
It took about an hour to get the fire out, he said.
Firefighters worked as a smoke plume hung in the sky from a fire at Fort Carson 50 miles away.
Poole said the Yoder fire came dangerously close to a home but was stopped by residents with help from firefighters.
Because of dry conditions, Poole said the district has enacted an ban on open burning until further notice.
