Clinton rebounds in Nevada, Trump takes South Carolina; Bush drops out
After a dismal defeat in New Hampshire, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rebounds with a narrow, but clear victory in Nevada, the first state on the primary calendar with a large minority population.
“It is a campaign to break down every barrier that’s holds you back,” Clinton said in her victory speech.
After the loss, Sen. Bernie Sanders told supporters he’s going all the way to the convention this summer.
“When Democrats assemble in Philadelphia in July, we are going to see one of the great political upsets in the history of the United States,” Sanders said.
Colorado College political science professor Tom Cronin knows the Clinton campaign regained confidence.
“She obviously has had a re-balancing in the campaign today,” Cronin said.
“It was a political victory. Sanders had a moral victory in the sense of coming so close.”
Donald Trump makes it two for three with a decisive victory in the South Carolina GOP Primary.
“Politics are tough, it’s vicious, it’s nasty, it’s beautiful, Trump said. “When you win it’s beautiful.”
Marco Rubio edged out Ted Cruz for second and Jeb Bush said farewell to the 2016 race for the White House after finishing a disappointing fourth.
“The people of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina have spoken and I respect their decision,” Bush said. “So, tonight i am suspending my campaign.”
Cronin argues Trump will be hard to beat.
“It’s very hard to see a way to stop him,” the political scientist said. “If you have Cruz and Rubio both in there they will be hurting each other. If one of them dropped out and i don’t see that happening, then I think Trump can be equalized or maybe neutralized.”
