Construction changes on I-25 and Fillmore has drivers looking for alternatives

Construction changes on I-25 and Fillmore is an added wait time for some drivers.

Last month C-DOT installed a new island and no left turn sign to help with traffic in the area. However, some say it’s been problematic since.

“It’s been a pain ever since I moved here. Everyone slams on their brakes when they see it,” said Jason Shabley.

The left turn sign means drivers are not allowed to make a left turn onto Sinton Road.

“This is where we live and they’ve made it to where we can’t get in here, but we don’t have a choice,” said Jennifer Ortega.

A spokesperson for C-DOT told KRDO news the new island is more safe for drivers and prevents them from making a U-turn in the congested area. But it also means drivers need to find an alternate route.

“I have to make a right hand turn then go all the way to Garden of the Gods, all the way to Nevada to Fillmore,” said Wayne Fuller.

Fuller lives at the Fillmore Crossing Apartments nearby. He and nearby business owners say the lane closure is a burden.

“It takes time which I understand, all due respect, but it should be done in a respectable way that can make people happy,” said Fuller.

Shabley says he’d like to see other solutions.

“Coordinate the lights. Simple fix, it would eliminate all this traffic that piles up here during rush hour,” said Shabley.

C-DOT suggests drivers make a U-turn at Mark Dabling Boulevard. They say they’re aware of the concerns and working as fast as they can. They plan on having a meeting next month to discuss concerns with residents and business owners.
