Pueblo Chemical Depot set for phase two of destorying chemical weapons
The Pueblo Chemical Depot is set to destroy the bulk of its chemical weapons.
Last week, the depot said it already destroyed 560 faulty weapons.
Workers will now wait for their destruction plant to open to destroy the more than 750,000 other shells.
The depot is hoping to have the plant open by June to continue its mission.
Site project manager Greg Mohrman said he’s happy to destroy the chemical weapons to make the world a safer place.
“When we’re done here, there is only one other site that stores American chemical weapons. It’s hugely important. We are making history here,” he said.
The depot hopes to have all the chemical weapons destroyed by 2019.
Leaders at the depot said they are continuing to clean up the contaminants in the area. Officials said there were 60 sites in the area where there was potential for contamination. Thirty-four of them have been cleared, but crews still need to clean out 26 other areas.
PuebloPlex will take over the depot after the Army’s mission is complete in destroying the chemical weapons. PuebloPlex will encompass more than 23,000 acres of land, and 200 spots have already been leased out to people.
