Drivers seek warning signs around worst potholes

Colorado Springs will begin spending money this spring from a sales tax increase for repaving streets, but until then, many drivers worry about potholes becoming worse and more dangerous.

Crystal Hubbard, 53, said she injured her hip last fall at the intersection of Bijou Street and Murray Boulevard while driving her scooter in an area that was being repaved for pothole repairs.

She said her scooter fell on her when it hit the repair area. She has since been unable to work and has mounting medical bills.

“This has really rocked my life,” Hubbard said. “It’s changed everything. I was trying to build my credit so that I could get a car. This is going to destroy my credit. I can’t pay my (medical) bills.”

She’s asking that the city place warning signs around the worst potholes to give drivers plenty of advance notice and help them avoid vehicle damage or personal injury.

Several drivers have complained about a large pothole at the intersection of Pikes Peak and Logan avenues that has damaged many vehicles and appears to be worsening.

A city representative says workers normally do not place warning signs or barricades around potholes, and people should call 719-385-ROAD to report particularly bad potholes to give them a higher priority for repairs.

By law, the city is protected from pothole damage claims and has not paid any of 545 claims filed in the past year, according to a city representative.
