Affidavit: Man at center of Springs standoff has history of drug abuse, delusions

An arrest affidavit that was released Friday morning is revealing new information about a man who was at the center of an hours-long standoff in Colorado Springs Thursday night.

Erik Konig, 30, was arrested without incident at 9:18 p.m. after tear gas was fired into his home.

The standoff began at 5:08 p.m. in the 3600 block of Bering Heights, near S. Academy Boulevard and E. Fountain Boulevard.

According to the affidavit, Konig’s friend, Alan Merrick, told police that he was hanging out with Konig when Konig got up and grabbed a gun. Konig told Merrick that people were trying to hurt him, and then fired the gun through his front door, the document says.

Police called Konig’s mom. She told them that he has a history of substance abuse and that he has a history of delusional behavior when he is under the influence of the drugs. The document did not specify which drug or drugs Konig has a history of abusing.

The affidavit says Konig was not answering phone calls from police, so a loudspeaker was used to order him to come out.

When Konig refused to come out of the home, the SWAT team was called.

After his arrest, Konig’s home was searched. The affidavit says seven guns and four spent shell casings were found in the home. It says that bullet holes were observed near the front door, but that the bullets were not found.

The affidavit also says that Konig’s home is located near a park with a playground, and that bullets fired through his front door could have hit someone in that park.

Konig faces charges for failure or refusal to leave premises or property upon request of a peace officer, prohibited use of weapons and reckless endangerment. All of the charges are misdemeanors.
