Lion cub born at Pueblo Zoo

The Pueblo Zoo announced the birth of a male African lion cub Thursday.

The cub, which has not yet been named, was born on January 13 and is thriving. The zoo says he weighed in at nine pounds during his first check up.

The cub’s mother, Mashavu, 9, is caring for him. Zoo staff is monitoring mom and cub via closed circuit camera so that they can have plenty of time together to bond. His father, Taz Jahari, 13, is also being kept at a distance at this time.

The zoo plans to debut the family to the public in April.
