Update: Police investigate possible attempted kidnapping on Springs west side

The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating a suspicious incident involving an 11-year-old girl who was approached by a man in his 20s Wednesday morning.

The incident happened in the 1600 block of West Cucharras Street on the city’s west side.

Police say the girl was walking to the bus stop when the man started walking with her. They say that after about 2 blocks, the man made some comments that scared the girl. Police did not say what those comments were.

The girl then ran to a friend’s house.

“She knew to do the right thing, she knew it was a threat and she didn’t feel comfortable and needed to get away as soon as she could,” said Devra Ashby, communications director for District 11.

The girl attends Midland International Elementary school.

“Because it happened near one of our schools and because she attends a different school, we notified both schools, families and communities. We’re sending home a letter,” said Ashby.

The police department is still searching for the man and neighbors say they’re also on the lookout.

“Its pretty scary. I hope they find out what’s really going on. I’m sure after this, everyone in the neighborhood will be aware, keeping an eye out for the kids,” said Louisa Hansen.

The man is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, 120-140 pounds, and was wearing a dirty dark green or black jacket and dark baggy pants. If you have any information you’re asked to call Colorado Springs Police or Crime Stoppers.

The district is reminding parents to talk to their children about these scenarios.

“Any chance you get talk with them about how they would react in this situation. What they would do, do they have the appropriate numbers to call? Would they know to call police? Would they know how to get an accurate description and describe that person,” said Ashby.
