Springs struggles to clear side streets
The snow that fell earlier this week added up to 18″ in some parts of El Paso County.
Now city crews will work 18 hour shifts to get rid of all that snow.
Plowing the side streets is a big job considering the city’s resources. It’s not a question of will or work ethic, it’s simple math.
The city has 40 trucks at it’s disposal. Those trucks have to cover around 5000 miles of roads. That’s more than 100 miles per truck.
In terms of population, that’s one truck for every 11,000 or so residents.
Those resources puts this storm clean up in perspective for locals and visitors alike.
Cindy Barajas is visiting her daughter from Northern California. She said, “In our small town, which is about 1800 people, we see the plows out and they work from sun-up to sun down to try and make sure that a lot of people can get out.”
While we did get some help from nature today with some sunshine, the snow is not going anywhere Wednesday night with lows near zero.
And it will take much more sun to make all of the snow go away.
