Road troubles in northern El Paso County

It is a snowy start to Monday afternoon around Southern Colorado.

Here in northern El Paso County we’ve seen a number of accidents, including one near the Douglas County line and another slide off directly across the highway from the scenic turnout overlooking the Air Force Academy.

Earlier on today, the interstate was mostly clear as the Colorado Department of Transportation (C-DOT) trucks were able to go back and forth over the roads and clear any snow.

Traffic was able to go near the speed limit on the interstate.

C-DOT has a lot of trucks to throw at the snow – 160 of them for Southeastern Colorado alone – but the heavy snow has begun to overwhelm them.

Truckers that we talked to say that they’re expecting to have to put on the chains as the weather gets worse.

Cesar Chavez said, “I’m pretty sure as soon as get into deep southern Colorado, by Raton Pass – I’m probably going to have to put them on.”

Chavez was mentioning Raton Pass since it is one of the most dangerous places for drivers in the state.

The C-DOT plows are going to have their work cut out for them as the snow continues to be heavy through the rest of Monday and into Tuesday.
