Nearly 50 city plows called to help Sunday storm, prep for Monday

Colorado Springs city crews had their entire staff clearing the roads Sunday. The city had all 45 plows working against the storm.

“We’ll continue a full call out after midnight to ensure Monday morning’s commute goes well. We’ll be concentrating on the schools and helping school districts out as well,” said Terry Huggins, City Snow manager.

Slick roads caused accidents throughout the day, causing travel trouble for drivers.

“The problem is when it freezes, all the people who don’t know how to drive in it are really going to have a problem,” said Gunn Haydan.

“Icy and a little dicey but nothing bad. If you drive 25 to 35 mph your fine,” said Jack Shaefer.

City crews are making sure problematic areas are plowed and sanded first.

“Our primaries are our main streets that we do like Acamdey Boulevard and Austin Bluffs,” said Huggins.

Drivers tried to make the most of the situation.

“I honestly love the snow. I’m super excited for it and hoping school gets cancelled tomorrow,” said Sydney Cost.

If you have to travel, the city wants to remind drivers to make room for city plows.

“Don’t crowd or try to pass them. They’re out there for a reason. We’re trying to make it safe for all the citizens to get around,” said Huggins.

The city also expects to have a full crew out Monday afternoon into Tuesday depending on conditions.
