Pueblo police union members support chief

Members of the Pueblo police union are coming out in support of Police Chief Luis Velez.

Some officers contacted our partners at The Chieftain to say that the union does not speak for them and that the purpose of the survey was to try and get Velez to decide to resign his position.

During a City Council meeting earlier this week, Councilwoman Lori Winner brought up replacing the chief.

She says the city council still plans to meet with Velez to discuss the survey results- and the continued officer shortage.

Winner says she still believes it’s in the city’s best interest to replace the chief.

“I take a look at the stats, and the stats are my concern. The stats have been on the front page of our paper quite a few times,” said Winner.

Union officers pointed to City Manager Sam Azad as the problem, not Velez. Azad says he is doing the best he can with the budget in front of him.

“(The) police chief works for me, he has done whatever I’ve asked him to do, so, I am fully behind him, I am supportive of the decisions he makes,” said Azad.
