Springs city council approves controversial ordinance

Colorado Springs city council voted on Tuesday to move ahead with the controversial “sit-lie” ordinance.

Six members of council voted for the ordinance, with Councilwoman Helen Collins and Councilman Andres Pico voting against.

Supporters and opponents presented arguments that were heated at times at City Council on Tuesday.

Supporters said the proposal could help spur business in downtown Colorado Springs, since it would reduce the fear that some people have in going downtown, especially at night.

Opponents argued that the ordinance could punish anyone who stops to rest downtown and is unnecessary.

Nancy Borden said, “My friends and I can’t come downtown anymore. I feel threatened, I’m scared.”

But Zac Chapman argued that the ordinance wouldn’t help.

“If you pass this act it’s not going to change anything about this perception of safety,” he said.

The ordinance will impose fines of $500 for offenders. Council will take a final vote on it on Feb. 9th.
