American Legion hosts vigil for missing Marine with ties to Fountain
American Legion Post 38 hosted a vigil Wednesday night for a missing Marine with family ties to Fountain.
Sgt. Jeffrey Sempler is one of twelve Marines missing since their helicopters crashed off Oahu, Hawaii.
His mom, Laurie Allen, lives in Fountain with her husband. His friends at American Legion hosted the vigil to offer prayers and support for the family.
It’s been six days since Sempler went missing, and Laurie Allen hopes against the odds that he’ll come home.
“More than anything I would like them to say ‘hey guess what? We got them. We found them, they’re in a hospital. Come on out and be by their side.” But I don’t think that’s going to happen,” said Laurie Allen.
During the vigil, American Legion member and family friend Dean Noechel spoke about Sempler’s service and the impact this has had on his family.
“To see them go through this, it’s devastating. There are no words that I can say or anyone can say to bring him home,” said Noechel.
Dozens of people light candles and sang songs as Sempler’s family held each other and cried.
“It’s heartbreaking, it does bring tears to your eyes,” said Sonja Caudle.
“If there is anything we can do for them, all they have to do is ask,” said Bryan Osmus.
Sempler was less than three weeks away from coming home on leave.
There will be a spaghetti dinner fundraiser next Saturday night to help the family with potential expenses. It will at 5 p.m. at American Legion Post 38 off Southmoor Drive in Fountain. It costs $10 to get in and the public is welcome.
