MLK Day Events and Closures

Colorado College celebrates the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 18 with a variety of events, including a presentation by Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington titled “30 Years and Counting: Living the Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

8 a.m.: “All Peoples’ Breakfast” Reid Arena in the El Pomar Sports Center, 44 W. Cache La Poudre St.; $7
The “All Peoples’ Breakfast” has become an annual Martin Luther King Day tradition in which citizens honor King’s legacy by coming together to eat and reflect on important civil and human rights issues of the day. Keynote speaker Gwen Brown presents “Activism – Engagement – Empowerment: A Call for ACTION” and the New Direction Baptist Church Brotherhood Choir will sing. Tickets: $7,

11:15 a.m.: Kathryn Mohrman Theatre (formerly Armstrong Theatre), 14 E. Cache La Poudre St.; free
Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington Known as “The Engagement Specialist,” Washington sees himself as an instrument of change and will present “30 Years and Counting: Living the Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” Washington serves as the president and founder of the Washington Consulting Group, a multicultural organizational development firm out of Baltimore, Maryland. He is also the president and a founder of the Social Justice Training Institute and serves as visiting assistant professor of religion and social ethics at Winston-Salem State University.

2 to 3 p.m.: What Does Rev. Dr. King’s Vision Mean to You?” Butler Center, Glass-Lennox House, 1001 N. Nevada Ave.
This free program encourages participants to share their stories on how Dr. King’s vision plays out in daily life.
3 to 5 p.m.: “Race, The Power of an Illusion, Episode Three: The House We Live in.” Butler Center, Glass-Lennox House, 1001 N. Nevada Ave.
Includes a discussion and showing of the documentary. The event will explore how racism in government housing policies helped create a racial wealth gap.

7 p.m.: Kathryn Mohrman Theatre (formerly Armstrong Theatre), 14 E. Cache La Poudre St.; free
Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble The Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble is internationally esteemed as one of America’s foremost modern dance companies. The ensemble performs a dynamic body of works inspired by the African-American experience and rooted in ethnic and modern dance traditions worldwide. The ensemble continues to be a leader in dance innovation and the promotion of American dance heritage.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO.– All City of Colorado Springs administrative and elected administrative offices and agencies will be CLOSED on Monday, January 18, 2016 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day including:
• City Hall
• City Clerk
• Municipal Court
• Sales Tax Office
• Administrative offices for Mountain Metropolitan Transit
• Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Administrative Building
• City Auditorium – Closed for Business. Private rentals only.
• Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum
• Deerfield Hills Community Center
• Hillside Community Center
• Meadows Community Center
• Otis Park
• Rockledge Ranch Historic Site
• Sports Office and Therapeutic Recreation Programs at Memorial Park
• Starsmore Discovery Center
OPEN:

• Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain
• Sertich Ice Center -Open Public Programming: 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Matiness Skate. All ages: $2 Admission / $2 Skate Rental

• Valley Hi Golf Course and Patty Jewett Golf Course: TBA – weather permitting

EL PASO COUNTY
All El Paso County administrative and elected administrative offices and affiliated agencies, including El Paso County Public Health, the Pikes Peak Workforce Center, CSU Extension, the offices of the 4th Judicial District Attorney,

El Paso County Public Trustee and El Paso County Combined Courts will be closed Monday, January 18, 2016 in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The County Clerk and Recorder’s north branch North Branch (Union and Research Parkway) will be open usual hours on Saturday, January 16, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
