Pueblo group rallies to support domestic violence survivors
A Pueblo group is on a mission to put an end to domestic violence.
“Women with Wings” started a year ago, but on Saturday, they hosted their first conference.
Survivors and those still overcoming abusive situations shared stories at Family Worship Center.
They say they’re determined to help each other through the healing process.
“I was in an abusive marriage. It was verbally, physically, sexually abusive,” said Danielle Huffman, co-founder of Women with Wings.
That’s why she began the group. Huffman says she wanted to give survivors a voice and safe place to have in the midst of dangerous situations.
“It’s a scary journey. And no one needs to do it alone,” Huffman added.
“I escaped a very violent relationship five years ago and the future looked very hopeless for me. I dispaired of anything good ever happening in my life again,” Robin Mullins-Singer said, a domestic abuse survivor.
Mullins-Singer is now in a healthy, thriving relationship.
Cathy McShane, another attendee, can also attest to triumphing over abuse.
“I have now met a wonderful man been married almost 23 years we have two kids and still on the journey of recovering my self esteem,” McShane explained.
Taking the first step is the most difficult, according to the women, but the most necessary.
“Those things that are causing the most fear are actually your greatest opportunity and if you can look forward you can experience the most amazing things in life. Do not give up hope. There is always hope. To surround yourself with a community of people who can support you,” said Mullins-Singer.
