UPDATE: Escaped Woodland Park theft suspect arrested, police looking into safety of vehicles

Police say a theft suspect who escaped from police custody in Woodland Park has been arrested in Colorado Springs.

Tammara Martin, 34, was reportedly arrested in the 1600 block of S. Nevada Avenue.

Woodland Park Police say Martin was handcuffed when she escaped from the back seat of a cruiser in the parking lot of the Walmart in the 19600 block of E. Highway 24.

Martin was one of four suspects accused of stealing from the store.

Police say Martin, who had been placed under arrest, escaped at around 2:30 a.m.

“As they were rounding up some other folks, they found that she had gotten out of the vehicle and taken off,” explained Commander Jim Halloran, with the Woodland Park Police Department.

Woodland Park Police say a Blue Dodge Caravan with Alaska plates was later reported stolen. They say that van was also found in the Colorado Springs neighborhood where she was recaptured.

Police add, they’ll be examining the safety of their cruisers following the incident. “We’re going to look at our vehicles a little closer to make sure we don’t have it happen again,” said Commander Halloran.

Martin faces multiple charges, including ID theft, forgery, conspiracy, and possession of drugs.
