Robert Dear claims no planning went into Planned Parenthood attack

The confessed Planned Parenthood shooter, Robert Dear, is talking about why he chose the Colorado Springs clinic for his attack. Robert Dear spoke with KCNC in Denver, over the phone from jail.

“It was just a spur of the moment, that, OK, they wanted, they wanted to slay, to come for me,” said Dear.

Dear claimed in his interview that the FBI was following him the morning of the shooting and they had been following him for years.

“I felt like they were going to get me, and so I’m going to pick where I want to make my last stand. I picked Planned Parenthood because it’s murdering little babies,” said Dear.

“That’s paranoid delusion that would be highly unlikely anyone would be following you for 22 years. There’s several things that generally tend to pop up in psychotic disorders and one of them you can immediately see in this article is disorganized thinking,” said Larry Nutter, retired mental health clinician.

Nutter says listening to the interview, Dear’s conversation seemed scattered.

“When I got there, of course, those guys, they knew I was armed, they knew everything about me. Well, they slither off like little snakes and then they get the local cops to do their dirty work,” said Dear.

“All of this is clearly demonstrating psychosis. Now, the question will be for whoever eventually evaluates him is, is he malingering or is he telling the truth?”

We asked a legal analyst to determine if comments Dear made on the phone could be used at court against him at his next hearing.

“These comments can absolutely be used against him from here on out. Anything that he says can be used against him,” said Jeremy Loew, attorney at law office of Jeremy Loew.

Loew says no criminal defense attorney would advise their client to speak to the media. A spokesperson with El Paso County Criminal Justice center says Dear has the right to answer or make calls to anyone he wants to speak with.

Dear’s awaiting a mental evaluation to determine if he can stand trial.

“His statements are not helping him in the sense of providing him a better defense. But they go to show he’s probably not competent at this time,’ said Loew.

“If I’m coherent and I’m sane, why would I want to open Pandora’s box?,” said Dear.

Dear’s next hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24.
