Child Starts Destructive House Fire

A child playing with matches cost a family their home and many belongings. It happened Wednesday in Olney Springs.

“As soon as I crossed the tracks, I can usually see my house from there but all I seen was just black smoke,” said Andrea Martinez, a family member of the homeowners.

The longtime home of the Martinez family caught fire when one of the children was playing with matches.

“Unfortunately this can serve as an example as to what can happen,” said Crowley County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Mark Morlock.

The Sheriff’s Office says the house is a total loss, but the family sees it as a new beginning.

The Sheriff’s Office is collecting donations for the family.

“Clothing, blankets, whatever they feel they would like to donate,” said Morlock.
