Dozens of cars vandalized over one month in neighborhood near Old Colorado City

A neighborhood near Old Colorado City continues to be targeted, but police have no idea who’s behind it.

There have been more than 25 reports of cars shot at and vandalism over the month of December. A majority of the vandalism is happening near North 30th Street and King Street.

Melissa Griego’s cars have been shot at three separate times in a period of three weeks. Colorado Springs police believe the damage is from a BB gun.

“They’re saying it’s criminal mischief right now and having a hard time pinpointing who’s doing it. I’m thinking it’s some kids around the area,” said Griego.

Griego has spent thousands of dollars fixing two of her cars three times. She’s one of several residents in the area who have been targeted at what appears to be random.

“I came out and looked at my car and I couldn’t believe it,” said Paul Chavez.

Two of Chavez’s car windows were destroyed. The damage was so severe he believes someone threw a rock at his window.

“I think they were driving by and threw it. They must have thrown it awful hard to do that much damage to the car,” said Chavez.

Since these incidents have happened, residents have been keeping their cars off the streets.

“Now we’re parking them other places on the street in the neighborhood in hopes they won’t be hit again. I shouldn’t have to do that, this is supposed to be my home, my safe place,” said Griego.

“Why do people wanna pick on you for? You know, you’re just living your life, working, trying to enjoy life and people just come by and tear up your stuff,” said Chavez.

Residents are fed up and hope someone is caught before it’s too late.

“What happens if they get their hands on something more lethal and start shooting windows or houses with guns with live ammo?” said Griego.

Police have no suspect information or vehicle descriptions, which is making it difficult to find a suspect. They recommend residents install surveillance cameras outside their homes.
