Why Powberall can be problematic for gamblers

People in Colorado Springs have been lining up all week to get their hands on a Powerball ticket. While $900 million may sound nice, it can be even more tempting for gamblers.

“I keep buying and never win anything. I hope I do this time,” said Ba Denny.

For some, it can be more than just a game. It’s a lifestyle.

“I go every week, sometimes twice a week,” said Denny.

There’s a line between pastime and problem. Six million Americans are considered problem gamblers.

“When you’re doing either drugs or gambling or any addiction, it causes a surge of dopamine in your brain and your brain takes it as an indication its important for survival,” said David Bell, a gambling therapist.

The higher the jackpot, the higher temptation.

“It’s a lot of money, I really hope I get it,” said Cole Cote.

Bell says it can be more addicting than casinos.

“Powerball is even worse because there’s a huge astronomical probability you’re not going to win,” said Bell.

Living in Colorado Springs, where we’re in close proximity to Cripple Creek, it can add to the addiction problem.

“Is there a gambling problem in Colorado? Definitely. You know we have casinos here and it’s that type of thing if you have that access,” said Bell.

People in Colorado Springs were hopeful to win the jackpot.

“I’d give money to people who needed it, so charities, my family,” said Levi Durrow.

“It would be a pretty good trip to Las Vegas for punk rock bowling, buy a farm and travel,” said Matthew Torres.

While it can be exciting, Bell says it should be played responsibly.

“They have to realize they have a problem and want to fix it. Without those two things it wont get better,” said Bell.

If no one claims the jackpot, it’s expected to grow to $1.3 billion by Wednesdays drawing.
