City of Colorado Springs working to improve safety around CC campus
The city of Colorado Springs is working on a project to improve safety around the Colorado College campus, after a student was hit and dragged while crossing the street.
The 20-year-old student was hit at around 6 p.m. on Monday while waiting at a crosswalk on Cascade.
Thus, the proposed safety project focuses on where Cascade and Nevada run through campus.
Colorado Springs Transportation Manager Kathleen Krager says there have been four pedestrian accidents in the area in the last 12 months.
Students who walk the area daily say cars are notorious for speeding through the area, and they are ready for a change.
“A lot of people speed and then slow down really abruptly when they’re on Cascade,” said Cat Braza. “But I think it’s even worse on Nevada. Nobody stops for pedestrians there. Everyone goes fast. You really just have to wait your turn no one gives you the right of way.”
“I’ve generally just been starting to feel less safe,” Caleigh Cassidy said. “I always make sure that cars are going to stop before I cross the street because there’s no guarantee.”
“I usually just wait a minute for the cars to go but sometimes there will be people turning off and they won’t stop you know? I’ve almost been hit a couple of times myself,” Cole Ubert added.
The public can expect concept designs of the project to be released this spring.
