Trial of former officer accused of murder delayed for a second time

The start of the trial of a former Rocky Ford police officer who is accused of murdering a man while on duty has been postponed.

James Ashby’s second-degree murder trial is now slated to begin on June 7.

This is the second time that the start of the trial has been delayed. It was originally scheduled for July 2015 before being pushed back to January 11.

Last month, 480 potential jurors were summoned for the trial. They were given a seven page questionnaire that contained 58 questions.

Prosecutors say Ashby shot Jack Jacquez in the back on Oct. 12, 2014. Ashby told investigators he thought Jacquez was a burglar.
