No indictment for officer who killed unarmed parole violator

A grand jury has declined to indict a Colorado police officer for fatally shooting an unarmed man while trying to arrest him for domestic violence.

A report released Wednesday says the grand jury believed Officer Paul Jerothe acted reasonably in shooting 37-year-old Naeschylus Carter Vinzant.

Vinzant was shot in March in the Denver suburb of Aurora. He was black and Jerothe is white. Authorities say Vinzant was on parole for a prior assault conviction and had cut his monitoring bracelet and fled after beating his wife.

Prosecutors say the officer believed Vinzant was about to pull a gun and open fire. Jerothe shot Vinzant once in the chest but later realized he was unarmed.

Jerothe received national honors for saving lives in the 2012 Colorado movie theater shooting.
