UPDATE: Water main break repairs to continue through Wednesday

Repair work on two water mains in Colorado Springs is now expected to continue through Wednesday.

The break was reported Saturday morning at the intersection of Rangewood Drive and Saddle Rock Road.

Rangewood Drive is closed between Vickers Drive and Austin Bluffs Parkway while Colorado Springs Utilities crews work to fix the break.

“It takes me at least about 10 minutes longer to get to (Interstate) 25 or other parts of town, since I can’t go this way any more,” said neighbor Megan Lundberg. “It’s a little inconvenient but it’s not too bad. I know they’re working as fast as they can, to fix it. You just have to try to be patient about it.”

Crews estimated that repairs would be done Tuesday, but said cold temperatures will be making it especially tricky to patch the road. They now hope to reopen the road by Wednesday evening.

No customers are without water, and crews believe the break is due to an aging iron pipe and cold weather that shifts the ground near the main. The damaged iron pipe has been replaced with a plastic pipe to provide greater durability.

According to crews at the scene, the break is unusual in that it’s deeper than most breaks and the broken main is under a second main.

The utility said after the break is repaired, traffic westbound on Rangewood will be reduced to one lane because of damages caused by high-pressure water from the broken main.

The street above the repaired break will be temporarily paved, the utility said, until workers do a more permanent paving next spring.
