Fremont County Sheriff’s Office warning of phone scam

A Target 13 Alert: The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office is telling people to beware of a holiday phone scam.

Over the weekend, they received several reports of random phone calls.

Someone is claiming they are a detective with the county, telling people they have warrants out for their arrest.

“Most people disregarded the call. Some called the sheriff’s office to check on it. There were two that showed up with money to bond out because they believed they had warrants for their arrest. They didn’t,” said Capt. Jeff Worley, with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office. “And in this case there was no fraud involved. Sometimes there are people who are looking to gain monetary benefit and so they might try to claim or collect bond, that wasn’t done in this case.”

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident, saying the person or people who did this could face charges for impersonating a peace officer.
