Salvation Army makes Christmas extra special for hundreds of families
Hundreds of families in need in Colorado Springs received some Christmas cheer Wednesday.
The Salvation Army gave away gifts, food and household items to about 450 families, including about 1,300 children.
“It does take a lot of organization, but it really is worth it at the end,” Maj. Richard Larson said. “We really do make a difference in people’s lives.”
Those selected to receive gifts are working families who may be struggling but don’t qualify for other programs in the community. The Salvation Army takes referrals from local schools. The families sign up in the fall. They fill out forms listing the number of children in the family, their age and things they’d like for Christmas. Volunteers work to match donations with kids’ wish lists.
“I’m just hoping to get anything that’s going to put a smile on my kid’s face, any more than what I’ve been able to do,” Tina Marrero Albino said.
The families also received food for a week and household items.
