Suspects in Cascade home invasion make court appearance

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says two arrests were made in connection to a standoff that happened off of Highway 24 and Ute Pass Avenue Sunday.

Highway 24 was closed for hours because of the standoff.

On Sunday, deputies said Eli Hahn, 28, was arrested and taken to a hospital before going to jail. Hahn faces charges for first-degree burglary, aggravated robbery, attempted kidnapping, felony menacing, child abuse and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

On Monday evening, the Sheriff’s Office announced a second arrest. Henry Justin Henriquez, 29, faces charges of first-degree burglary, felony menacing and child abuse.

Both men were in court Tuesday. The deputy district attorney said that Hahn is a danger to the community and requested a $250,000 bond. The judge set his bond at $150,000.

Henriquez’s bond was set at $25,000.

The Sheriff’s Office says additional arrests are possible.

According to court documents, Hahn told El Paso County Sheriff’s Office investigators that he went to the home on Sunday morning to “send Dillon a message.” Dillon Samples was at the home with his girlfriend and her daughter. Hahn said Samples beat up his friend a few days early.

According to documents, Samples said he recognized Hahn. Samples told investigators Hahn held him, his girlfriend and her daughter at gunpoint and demanded drugs. He said Hahn told them if the cops showed up, he would kill them and then commit suicide.

Hahn told investigators that after Samples placed two laptops, 2 ounces of marijuana and 1-2 grams of heroin in a trash can, he made Samples carry the trash can outside. Hahn said that’s when Samples fled and Hahn was taken into custody by deputies outside.

According to court documents, in an interview later, Hahn told investigators that Henriquez was his accomplice. Investigators searched Henriquez residence, a hotel room at the Days Inn on Circle Drive. They said they found Henriquez was using the space as an operations base to store and move stolen goods.

Both men are convicted felon.

Highway 24 reopened just before 3 p.m. Sunday after shutting down for several hours. Kirby said Highway 24 was shut down in an abundance of caution because of the home’s proximity to the highway.

Deputies said seven people were evacuated safely from the home.

Kirby said 911 hang up calls began coming from the home around 8:30 Sunday morning. The dispatcher heard a woman crying on the phone.

According to court records, Hahn plead guilty in August to possession of a controlled substance, which is a Class 4 felony.

Neighbor Kevin Holt watched everything unfold Sunday morning from his upstairs window. He said deputies have responded to the home frequently during the last year to address various issues with the residents.

However, Holt said nothing has been as intense as Sunday’s incident.

“It was absolutely a violation of a small town community feeling that you are secure and safe without any problems. It’s just getting to be out of hand,” said Holt.

Bill Power lives next door to the home and also said law enforcement has responded to his neighbors’ house before.

“There is a bunch of them living over there. I guess they call it a commune?” said Power.

Residents at the home would not agree to an interview Sunday because KRDO NewsChannel 13 would not give them money as compensation.
