Pueblo Christmas food traditions

Christmas in Pueblo just isn’t complete without a few household staples.

At Frank’s Meat Market, Klobase is a customer favorite. It’s a Slovenian-style smoked sausage with garlic flavoring. Cooks are staying busy smoking meats and handling the Christmas rush.

Another famous stop for sausages in Pueblo — Gagliano’s Italian Market. The family’s been using the same Sicilian sausage recipe since 1921.

To handle the Christmas rush — many family members use their vacation time from their permanent jobs to help the store. Other famous Christmas staples at Gagliano’s include their traditional Sicilian-style olives and Italian cookies.

A lot of families in Pueblo say Christmas isn’t the same without Potica. It’s a famous nut roll that can be traced back to eastern European countries.

The owner of Janessa’s Gourmet Potica Company says this has been her busiest Christmas yet. A lot of customers tell her they grew up eating potica for Christmas.

From start to finish, it takes about five hours to make potica.
