Family remembers life of man who died in Colorado Springs stabbing
A family remembers a man they say died in a early morning stabbing.
Police answered a disturbance call on the 2500 block of St. Vrain Street at about three Saturday morning. Officers said the victim was taken to a local hospital and died there.
The family confirmed with KRDO that the victim is 38-year-old Charles Chavez Jr., also known as Chuck.
“He had a great big heart. He was that guy you called in the middle of the night. He would always be there,” said Wendi Gray, Chuck’s sister.
Gray says her younger brother always knew how to brighten the room. “He was just a comedian if he was in any room he would make us laugh,” said Gray.
Gray was a father to four. “He has four kids who love him and I know are going to miss him tremendously,” said Gray.
Police confirmed there is one suspect but have not released the name. Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside a home, which turned into a short standoff with a SWAT team. The suspect surrendered without any force being used.
“No time of the year is a good time but this is definitely the worst time for something like this to happen. So we’re focusing on healing and our next stage is to plan,” said Gray.
The case is under investigation. While police continue to piece together clues the family also searches for answers.
“We love him with all of our hearts and we’re going to miss him a lot,” said Gray.
Resident Dan Mullin said this crime won’t make him move away, but he isn’t surprised that these types of crimes happen in his neighborhood.
“Majority of folks in this neighborhood are just fine and stuff just happens,” he said.
