Coin worth more than $1,000 dropped in Colorado Springs Salvation Army kettle

The Salvation Army says someone placed an extremely valuable gold coin in one of its red kettles in Colorado Springs.

The 22-carat gold 1975 South Africa Krugerrand is estimated to be valued between $1,100 and $1,500.

Sertoma Club volunteers were ringing outside of the Sears store at the Chapel Hills Mall when the coin landed in the red kettle.

“To our knowledge, this is the first time a coin of this value has been placed in an El Paso County kettle,” said Major Richard Larson, El Paso County Coordinator. “We are grateful for the generosity of this anonymous donor.”

The Salvation Army will help nearly 1,400 children and 400 families through its Angel Tree and Adopt a Family programs this holiday season.
