Lasers target two airplanes in Colorado Springs

probably heard about this … planes making emergency landings across the country because of laser beams. this “laser assault” is happening right here in southern colorado … and it’s far more than a harmless prank. krdo newschannel 13’s greg miller found out the risk here to pilots and passengers, is huge… retired colenal al uhalt has flown planes for business and fun, for decades. nats – i’ve had this plane for 27 years… the idea of aircraft being targeted by lasers – worries him. sot: a laser that doesn’t maybe damage your eyes permanently can blind you momentarily. if you’re close to another airplane or on short final approach, for landing… it can cause an accident. he understands the danger – though he thinks people targeting them don’t. sot: they’re flirting with disaster that could kill a lot of people. standup: but lasers are becoming more of a threat in southern colorado…with threats this week alone. sunday night, a flight was grounded at the colorado springs airport after four green lasers targeted the plane. and last night police got a call that lasers pointing at a plane. sot: people believe this is criminal mischief, something that’s fairly inoculus. but you’re putting but you’re putting people’s safety in danger. faa regulations state that aiming a laser at a plane violates federal law – reenactments released by the fbi show why – the laser could blind a pilot mid-air. uhalt hasn’t personally been the target of a laser… uhalt: it hasn’t yet, but if it keeps up, it will, sooner or later. but he hopes more people learn the dangers before it’s too late. these cases are tough to investigate. investigators with both the faa and cspd didn’t have probable cause to issue arrests in either case.
