All-clear given after local Comcast facility evacuated because of bomb threat

A Comcast call center in the 4900 block of Centennial Boulevard on the west side of Colorado Springs was evacuated Wednesday because of a bomb threat.

As of mid-afternoon, Comcast said the building is safe and employees were allowed to return after a four-hour wait.

Police received the call about the threat around 10:15 a.m. Lt. Mike Lux said an employee found a suspicious note in an employee area of the building.

“My understanding is it said ‘a bomb threat’ or ‘bomb inside building.’ An employee of Comcast found that, brought it to their superiors,” he said.

Lux said the call center is a secure facility with a security guard on duty and limited public access.

“We don’t know of any trouble here previously that would lead to a threat like this,” he said.

Someone pulled the fire alarm in the building to make sure everyone was out, causing some brief confusion.

Police said a bomb-sniffing dog and the bomb squad were sent in to check the building twice but nothing was found.

Police started to let employees back in at around 11:45 a.m., but Comcast requested the building be searched again.

Employees were escorted to different buildings while the facility was searched for a second time.

Several hundred people work at the call center.

Police are investigating whether the threat was a prank and who’s responsible.

A woman who asked to remain anonymous said she was concerned about a relative who works at the center.

“It really disturbs me,” she said. “This reminded me of the (Black Friday) shooting. I’ve lived here for a long time. I hope the city does something about all of this. It’s not a good thing that we have going on here in Colorado Springs.”

A business across the street posted a note informing customers it was closing for the day because of safety concerns regarding the bomb threat.
