The Big Sandy School District in Simla closed Friday after a junior high school student passed away Thursday night.

School officials identified the student as 7th-grader Wesley Maranville.

The cause of his death is unknown at this time.

“Good student, good citizen, good athlete… His family is just top-notch. All-around Wesley was a great young man,” Big Sandy School District Superintendent Steve Wilson said.

Wilson says the Maranville family is closely tied with the school and has abundant support from the community.

Simla is located about 49 miles northeast of Colorado Springs just inside Elbert County near the El Paso/Elbert County line.
