Demolition begins at future site of Olympic Museum

Workers are on the ground at the site of a future Olympic-themed museum in downtown Colorado Springs.

Crews began demolition at South Sierra Madre Street and West Vermijo Avenue Wednesday. That is the future site of a new Olympic museum, one of the four City for Champions projects.

Workers are tearing down buildings and removing spare train tracks, asphalt and concrete. They hope to break ground on the museum next March and be done by the 2018 Winter Olympics.

“It’s been a lot of work to get to today, to see something tangible and concrete, it’s very exciting,” Project Manager Stan Rovira said.

The museum is being paid for in part by the state fund the city received for the City for Champions project and in part by private donors.

There is a meeting Thursday at 2:30 pm at the City Administration Building at 30 South Nevada Ave. in Room 102 to discuss all four projects.
