Colorado College professor: ‘Trump candidacy is a phenomenon’

A petition started Tuesday to keep Donald Trump out of the United Kingdom. As of Wednesday night, it surpassed more than 350,000 signatures.

In the states, his controversial remarks seem to be striking a chord with a portion GOP primary voters. For the better part of six months, Trump has led the Republican pack.

53-year-old Todd Garcia of Colorado Springs backs him.

“I think he’ll win in a landslide,” Garcia said. “He is speaking about issues affecting this country and he’s the only one doing it.”

Longtime Colorado College professor Bob Loevy says Trump’s call to ban Muslims from entering the U-S is no doubt controversial but effective.

“Every time there is another terrorist event that has the effect of being a Trump rally,” Lovey said. “He is the only candidate who’s consistently worked hard to propose real, workable solutions and that’s what voters are responding to. Donald Trump has proposed a concrete action the American people are responding to.”

The latest CNN poll out of New Hampshire has the GOP frontrunner 18 points ahead of Marco Rubio. Chris Christie and Jeb Bush are third and fourth.

“Donald Trump is now the person to beat in the Republican Party,” Loevy said. “Trump is in a place where you need to stand out in a large crowd. He is a phenomenon that characterizes our nominating process.”

“He is racist and is trying to buy his way into the presidency,” Demorcrat Liz Arnold said. “I think that United States deserves the best and the brightest when it comes to a president and he is not either.”

Trump tweeted his GOP loyalty only goes so far. Despite signing a pledge to support the GOP nominee next summer, Trump is keeping open the possibility of an independent bid.
