Local law enforcement officers receive public thanks during stressful times

Colorado Springs police got some love Wednesday from an anonymous citizen who left a bouquet of flowers at the Police Operations Center.

The collection of flowers and pinecones in a glass vase included a handwritten note that read: “With love and support in time of tragedy.” It was signed “Anonymous.”

The gift was the latest of dozens sent to police and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in appreciation for their service during the Halloween and Black Friday shootings in Colorado Springs.

This year has been particularly stressful for those departments. Officers and deputies have responded to two mass shootings in which six people died.

There also have been several accusations of brutality against Colorado Springs police and a lawsuit filed against the department by a group of female officers alleging age and gender discrimination.

“There have been a lot of unusual things happening,” said CSPD Sgt. Pamela Castro. “But the gifts are very much appreciated by our officers. We’re human and have feelings, just like the people we protect and serve.”

One woman, who asked to be identified only as Pamela, said law enforcement officers deserve a parade or other type of honor.

“We’re always honoring them when they die,” she said. “So maybe honoring them when they’re alive and do something as a city.”

Others voiced their appreciation, too.

“My dad was a New York police officer, so I know the good and (bad) of it,” said Eileen Von Fischer.

“I’ve had three cars stolen, several car accidents, been stranded a couple of times,” said Rev. Bruce Kinchens. “The police came to my aid, gave me a gas voucher once. I certainly appreciate them.”
