School bus tips in Boulder County; 5 students, driver hurt

Authorities say a school bus tipped onto its side in Boulder County, injuring the driver and five students.

The St. Vrain Valley School District bus was carrying eight students when it rolled in South St. Vrain Canyon near Lyons on Monday. St. Vrain Valley School District spokesman Damon Brown tells The Boulder Daily Camera that it appears that the most serious injury was a separated shoulder.

The State Patrol says in a news release that the driver, 39-year-old Elizabeth Burris of Longmont, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and will be booked into jail upon release from the hospital.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle says the bus was traveling uphill in a steep part of the canyon when it tipped, blocking the road. Investigators say the bus went off the side of the highway, and the driver overcorrected.

The newspaper says the students on the bus were from Lyons Middle/Senior High School and Lyons Elementary School. They ranged in age from 7 to 15.
